Prize in Optics In 2005 the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) created the Young Scientist Prizes for its commissions. The international Commission of Optics (ICO), as an Affiliated Commission of IUPAP, decided in 2008 to adopt the IUPAP Young Scientist Prize in Optics. The IUPAP prize in optics will be awarded annually through ICO to a scientist who has made noteworthy contributions to applied optics and photonics during a maximum of 8 years of research experience after having earned a PhD degree. Career interruptions will not be counted as time of research experience.   Prize in Astrophysics The Commission on Astrophysics of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics solicits nominations for its 2008 prize for an outstanding young astrophysicist, to be presented in December, 2008 at the 24th "Texas" Symposium on Relativistic Astrophysics in Victoria, BC, Canada. Candidates for the prize must not have completed more than 8 years of post-PhD research and related activities at the time the of the award. The prize will consist of an IUPAP Medal, travel expenses to the meeting where it is presented, and possibly a small cash award. The winner will probably be asked to give a short talk about the work for which the prize is awarded at the meeting.   Prize in Semiconductor Physics a) IUPAP Young Scientist Prize in Semiconductor Physics will be awarded to scientists not more than 8 years * past his/her completion of Ph. D thesis. (It excludes the maternity leave by a female researcher.) b) The number of the prize winners is up to two for every two years c) Each recipient receives a medal prepared by IUPAP and a check. The amount of prize check is $1000
